Cycling is the definitive New Forest activity — over 100 miles of waymarked cycle routes thread through the forest, largely car-free and accessible to all abilities. The Rufus Stone marks the spot where William II was killed by an arrow in 1100. Beaulieu Motor Museum is one of the most visited attractions in the south of England. The market towns of Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst offer good food, independent shops, and the New Forest Centre visitor attraction. The Solent coast at Lymington, Hurst Castle, and Lepe Country Park provide sailing, ferry trips to the Isle of Wight, and excellent beaches.
Camping tips for the New Forest
New Forest Forestry England sites are very popular and book up weeks in advance for school holidays. The forest animals — particularly the ponies — are wild, not tame: do not feed them or approach them closely, and keep dogs on leads at all times. Campfires are strictly prohibited throughout the New Forest. The forest roads have 40 mph limits and the animals wander onto them unpredictably, especially at night. Summer weekends bring heavy traffic on the A31 and A35; avoiding these peak times saves considerable time. Ticks are common in the forest; check yourself and pets after walks through long grass or undergrowth.
