Suffolk is one of the driest counties in England — annual rainfall at Lowestoft averages around 600mm, less than many parts of the Mediterranean. The county was one of the most prosperous in medieval England, enriched by the wool trade, a legacy visible in the grand perpendicular churches and timber-framed merchants' houses in towns like Long Melford, Clare, and Lavenham. Ipswich is the county town; Cambridge (technically in Cambridgeshire) is the nearest major city. The county has a strong food culture, with Sutton Hoo honey, Orford smoked fish, and Adnams ales among the local specialities that reward a camping food-and-drink tour.
Why camp in Suffolk?
Suffolk is the secret of East Anglia — less visited than Norfolk, equally beautiful, and dotted with medieval wool towns, AONB heathland, and a coastline defined by shingle beaches, crumbling cliffs, and some of the best birdwatching in Britain. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB runs from Kessingland in the north to Felixstowe in the south, taking in the legendary Snape Maltings concert hall, the bird sanctuary at Minsmere, and the atmospheric town of Aldeburgh. Inland, the valleys of the Stour and the Brett are Constable Country — every field and river bend looks painted. Suffolk campers tend to find peace, good food, and very little traffic.
