The Cotswolds AONB spans parts of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and Wiltshire. The characteristic honey-golden stone that defines the villages is oolitic limestone quarried locally — in sunlight it glows in a way that has made the Cotswolds one of the most photographed rural landscapes in the world. Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham stations on the Cotswold Line from London Paddington bring the area within easy reach without a car. The Cotswolds have a large number of farm-based glamping operations, a growing number of traditional tent-and-caravan sites, and several luxury camping (glamping) estates.
Why camp in the Cotswolds?
The Cotswolds AONB is England's largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a rolling limestone landscape of honey-coloured villages, ancient market towns, and meadows still filled with wildflowers that have largely vanished from the rest of lowland Britain. For campers, the appeal is a softer, gentler English countryside experience — meadow sites tucked into secret valleys, orchard pitches behind village pubs, and a landscape that photographers and painters have documented for centuries. The Cotswolds are within a two-hour drive of London, Bristol, Birmingham, and Oxford, making them perfect for a short break with a very high "postcard" return per mile driven.
