About camping in Scotland
Scotland covers one-third of the land area of Great Britain but holds only 8% of its population, giving it a genuine sense of space and wilderness. The two National Parks (Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, and Cairngorms) cover more combined area than any equivalent in England or Wales. Scotland's camping infrastructure spans commercial sites with full facilities, basic bothies maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association, and the unlimited wild camping permitted by the right to roam. The A9 from Perth to Inverness and the A82 down Loch Lomond are the main arteries; the NC500 and the Argyll roads are narrower and slower.
Why camp in Scotland?
Scotland has some of the most dramatic and accessible camping landscapes in Europe, and uniquely generous land access rights. The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 gives everyone the right to be on most land and inland water for recreational purposes, including wild camping — a freedom unavailable anywhere else in Great Britain. From the Cairngorms plateau (the largest area of arctic-alpine habitat in Britain) to the Atlantic-washed beaches of the Outer Hebrides, from the sea lochs of Argyll to the volcanic headlands of the Isle of Skye, Scotland offers camping experiences that simply do not exist in the rest of the UK.
