Things to do near Dorset campsites

Fossil hunting at Charmouth and Lyme Regis is one of the most family-friendly activities on the Jurassic Coast — ichthyosaur and plesiosaur remains are still found regularly. Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, and Chapman's Pool are iconic natural arches and coves accessible on foot. The coastal resort of Swanage is an excellent base for the Isle of Purbeck; Corfe Castle dominates the skyline above the village. Abbotsbury Swannery is a unique and wonderful attraction for families. The market town of Dorchester, Hardy's county town, offers the Dorset Museum and Roman town house. Wild swimming in chalk streams is a growing activity here.

Camping tips for Dorset

The most popular stretches of Jurassic Coast get very busy in school holidays — Lulworth Cove car park can be full before 9am in peak summer. Book Lulworth and Durdle Door pitches well in advance. Coastal sites face predominantly south-westerly winds; in an exposed storm these can be severe. The Isle of Purbeck is technically not an island but the Wareham channel makes it feel like one; roads can back up at the Sandbanks ferry or the Corfe causeway. Many Dorset sites are small and farm-based, with limited facilities but outstanding location — read descriptions carefully before booking.
