Why camp in the Lake District?
The Lake District is England's largest National Park and its only UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape — a distinction earned by the interplay of stunning natural scenery and the literary and artistic legacy of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Beatrix Potter, and John Ruskin. For campers it needs little selling: 16 major lakes, over 3,000 km of footpaths, some of England's highest peaks, and a network of small market towns and traditional pubs make it a destination that rewards return visits across a lifetime. The western lakes (Ennerdale, Wastwater) are wilder and less visited; the central lakes (Windermere, Grasmere) combine beauty with easy access.
Things to do near Lake District campsites
Hiking Scafell Pike (England's highest peak), taking a lake steamer across Windermere, cycling the Grizedale Forest trails, kayaking on Ullswater, and visiting Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farmhouse at Near Sawrey are among the most popular activities. The market towns of Keswick, Ambleside, and Hawkshead are packed with outdoor gear shops, cafés, and galleries. Aira Force waterfall is one of the most spectacular short walks in the country. For a quieter experience, the Howgill Fells or the Cumbrian coast at St Bees offer equal beauty with far fewer visitors.
