Why camp in the Cotswolds?
The Cotswolds AONB is England's largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a rolling limestone landscape of honey-coloured villages, ancient market towns, and meadows still filled with wildflowers that have largely vanished from the rest of lowland Britain. For campers, the appeal is a softer, gentler English countryside experience — meadow sites tucked into secret valleys, orchard pitches behind village pubs, and a landscape that photographers and painters have documented for centuries. The Cotswolds are within a two-hour drive of London, Bristol, Birmingham, and Oxford, making them perfect for a short break with a very high "postcard" return per mile driven.
Things to do near Cotswolds campsites
The Cotswold Way, a 102-mile National Trail from Chipping Campden to Bath, runs along the western escarpment with views over the Vale of Evesham and the Severn Valley. Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, Cirencester, and Chipping Campden are the most visited villages; Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, and Tetbury are quieter alternatives. Sudeley Castle, Blenheim Palace, and Hidcote Manor Garden (National Trust) are day-trip standouts. The town of Cheltenham offers festivals, independent shopping, and the Pittville Pump Room. Cycling the network of quiet lanes is an outstanding way to explore the area.
