Things to do near Peak District campsites

Chatsworth House and its estate is the unmissable great house; Dovedale, Monsal Dale, and Lathkill Dale are among the finest limestone valleys in England. The Tissington and Monsal Trails offer easy cycling on former railway lines through spectacular scenery. Mam Tor gives panoramic views over the Hope Valley and is an easy family walk. The market town of Bakewell is famous for its tarts and its weekly market. Climbing on the gritstone edges (Stanage, Burbage, Froggatt) draws climbers from all over Britain. For history, Peveril Castle and Arbor Low stone circle are both worth a detour.

Camping tips for the Peak District

The Dark Peak moorlands can be cold and wet even in summer — waterproofs and warm layers are essential. Many popular sites, particularly around Castleton and Edale, fill up very quickly on bank holiday weekends. Narrow lanes and weight-restricted packhorse bridges limit access for large outfits in some areas; check route suitability before heading to smaller farm sites. The National Park has strict rules about campfires — many sites prohibit open fires entirely. Wild camping is not permitted within the Peak District National Park without landowner permission. Parking in the most popular spots (Dovedale, Stanage) gets very congested; arriving early or cycling from your campsite helps.
