Camping tips for Devon

Book your Devon pitch well in advance if you're travelling in July or August — popular sites fill months ahead. For touring pitches with electric hookup, many coastal sites sit on narrow lanes, so check pitch size and access suitability for larger outfits before you arrive. Pack for mixed weather: even in summer, sea mist can roll in from the Atlantic overnight. The moor can be significantly cooler than the coast even on warm days. A good waterproof and walking boots are as important as sunscreen. If you're wild camping on Dartmoor, familiarise yourself with the Dartmoor National Park wild camping guidelines before setting out.

About camping in Devon

Devon sits in the far south-west of England and is the only county in England to have two separate coastlines — the rugged Atlantic north coast and the calmer English Channel south coast. With two National Parks (Dartmoor and part of Exmoor), an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covering the North Devon coast, and over 700 listed campsites, it has more camping provision per square mile than almost any other English county. The county town of Exeter is well-served by train links from London Paddington, making Devon accessible even without a car, and several campsite operators offer minibus transfers from local stations.
