About camping in Dorset
Dorset became England's newest National Park in 2019 when the Cranborne Chase AONB was renamed the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, and it borders the New Forest National Park to the east. The county is strongly associated with Thomas Hardy, who set most of his novels here ("Wessex" in his fiction; Dorset in reality). The Dorset AONB covers roughly a third of the county's area. Bournemouth and Poole to the east have become part of the BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole) unitary authority and are now technically in their own county, but most visitors treat them as part of a wider Dorset experience.
Why camp in Dorset?
Dorset is home to the Jurassic Coast, England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site — 95 miles of cliffs and beaches that expose 185 million years of Earth's history in a single walk. Beyond the fossils and geology, Dorset offers camping in some of the most diverse and beautiful countryside in southern England: chalk downland, heathland National Nature Reserves, the Fleet Lagoon behind Chesil Beach, and the ancient earthworks of Maiden Castle. The county has no motorways, which slows its pace to something more in keeping with a camping holiday, and its market towns — Sherborne, Blandford Forum, Wareham — retain genuine character.
