Camping tips for the New Forest
New Forest Forestry England sites are very popular and book up weeks in advance for school holidays. The forest animals — particularly the ponies — are wild, not tame: do not feed them or approach them closely, and keep dogs on leads at all times. Campfires are strictly prohibited throughout the New Forest. The forest roads have 40 mph limits and the animals wander onto them unpredictably, especially at night. Summer weekends bring heavy traffic on the A31 and A35; avoiding these peak times saves considerable time. Ticks are common in the forest; check yourself and pets after walks through long grass or undergrowth.
About camping in the New Forest
The New Forest National Park was designated in 2005, making it one of England's newest national parks. The New Forest Commoners, a group of local landowners, hold ancient rights to graze their animals on the open forest — these "verderers" still meet in the ancient Court of Verderers in Lyndhurst to administer the grazing rights. The area is notable for its biodiversity: it contains the largest extent of semi-natural ancient pasture woodland in lowland Britain and is an internationally recognised habitat for rare invertebrates. Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst are the main rail access points from London Waterloo.
