The RSPB Minsmere reserve near Dunwich is one of the finest birdwatching sites in Britain. Snape Maltings hosts the Aldeburgh Music Festival and a year-round programme of concerts and events. Sutton Hoo, the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site, is a National Trust property near Woodbridge with a world-class visitor centre opened in 2021. The medieval town of Lavenham, with its timber-framed Guildhall and crooked streets, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England. Southwold, with its lighthouse, coloured beach huts, and Adnams brewery tap, is the quintessential Suffolk seaside town.
Camping tips for Suffolk
Suffolk coastal sites can be windy and cool even on sunny days — sea breezes make the temperature feel lower than inland. Many sites are on former farmland with light soil that drains well; mud is less of a problem here than in wetter counties. The A12 is the main coastal road and can be slow in summer; many inland routes are faster. Ticks are present in the heathland areas — check yourself and pets after walks. Suffolk is excellent cycling country with many quiet lanes and off-road routes. The Heritage Coast path between Dunwich and Orford is an outstanding and under-used walking route.
